Aviation Turbine Disc Forging – High‑Temperature Superalloy Components for Commercial Jet Engines

A global aircraft engine OEM contracted Ronsco to supply high‑integrity forged turbine discs and shaft components for next‑generation high‑bypass‑ratio turbofan engines. These components operate at turbine entry temperatures exceeding 650°C and endure extreme centrifugal loads exceeding 400 MPa during high‑thrust take‑off cycles. The project demanded nickel‑based superalloy Inconel 718 (UNS N07718) – the industry's most widely used precipitation‑hardening alloy for critical rotating parts – manufactured through a multi‑stage forging process: ingot breakdown by cogging, open‑die upsetting, and final closed‑die forging with precise strain‑rate control. Ronsco implemented a tightly controlled thermomechanical processing route, including solution treatment at 955–1010°C followed by two‑stage aging (720°C ± 10°C for 8 hours, then 620°C ± 10°C for 8 hours). This precision heat treatment precipitates fine γ″ (Ni₃Nb) and γ′ (Ni₃(Al,Ti)) strengthening phases, achieving yield strengths exceeding 620 MPa at 650°C and a 10% increment in high‑temperature yield strength through direct‑aging (DA) treatment. All forgings underwent 100% ultrasonic testing (UT), penetrant inspection (PT), and mechanical validation (tensile, Charpy V‑notch, stress‑rupture) per AMS 5662/5663 standards. The refined equiaxed grain structure (ASTM 6 or finer) ensured superior low‑cycle fatigue (LCF) resistance, extending turbine disc service life by over 25% compared to conventionally forged alternatives.

Space Launch Vehicle Structural Forgings – Rocket Propellant Tank Rings & Engine Housings

The Tseung Kwan O Cross Bay Link is a landmark infrastructure project in Hong Kong, spanning approximately 1.8 kilometers across Tseung Kwan O Bay, with 1 kilometer of offshore viaduct. The main bridge features an outward-inclined butterfly steel arch design with a 214-meter main span and 100-meter side span steel box girders on each side. We played a significant role in the bridge's railing construction, supplying premium 1.4436 (316L) stainless steel plates and structural profiles. Despite production challenges posed by the pandemic, we implemented stringent quality controls over production, transportation, and delivery, ensuring the smooth progress of this iconic project. Upon completion, the bridge became the largest steel arch bridge in Hong Kong, joining the ranks of the iconic Tsing Ma Bridge and Stonecutters Island Bridge.

Tseung Kwan O Cross Bay Link Bridge – Hong Kong, China (Forged Components for Cable‑Stayed System)

Ronsco supplied custom‑forged bridge bearings and anchorage components for the iconic Tseung Kwan O Cross Bay Link Bridge. These forgings, produced from high‑strength low‑alloy steel and duplex stainless steel, were designed to withstand dynamic live loads, seismic forces, and coastal salt‑spray corrosion. The forged bearing housings and pin assemblies underwent rigorous ultrasonic testing (UT) and magnetic particle inspection (MPI) to ensure zero defects. The components’ refined grain structure, achieved through controlled forging and heat treatment, provided exceptional toughness at sub‑zero temperatures, critical for the bridge’s 120‑year design life.

Materials & Grades

Duplex Stainless Steel 1.4462 (UNS S32205) for corrosion‑resistant parts; S690QL high‑strength low‑alloy steel for load‑bearing forgings.

Specifications

Medium-to-heavy gauge stainless steel plates, custom-milled shell plates, and structural components for tank roofsForged bearing housings (OD 800–1200 mm), anchor brackets, pin shafts, and custom clevis forgings, all machined to tight tolerances (±0.05 mm).

Application Scenario

Main bridge cable‑stayed anchorage system, expansion joint bearings, and seismic‑resistant structural connections.

Oil & Gas / Pressure Vessel Forging

Saudi Aramco Storage Tank Production – Saudi Arabia

For Saudi Aramco’s mega‑scale tank farm expansion, Ronsco delivered high‑integrity forged flanges, tube sheets, and manway rings for API‑650 storage tanks and ASME pressure vessels. The forgings were produced from low‑carbon and micro‑alloyed steels with enhanced resistance to hydrogen‑induced cracking (HIC) and sulfide stress corrosion (SSC). Each forging was subject to full destructive and non‑destructive testing, including tensile, Charpy V‑notch, hardness, and ultrasonic examination. The closed‑die forging process ensured superior directional grain flow, substantially improving the fatigue life of bolted connections under cyclic thermal and pressure loading.

Materials & Grades

ASTM A182 F316L, F51 (Duplex 2205)

Specifications

Forged weld neck flanges (DN 150 – DN 1200, Class 150 – Class 2500), integral tube sheets, and custom ring forgings for manways.

Application Scenario

Pressure vessel shell connections, tank nozzle reinforcements, and high‑pressure piping systems subjected to sour service.

Chemical Processing / Viscose

Carbon Disulphide Adsorption Recovery Plant – Indonesia

For this CS₂ adsorption and distillation plant, Ronsco supplied large‑diameter forged tube sheets, channel heads, and pressure‑seal flanges for shell‑and‑tube heat exchangers and reboilers. Operating with aggressive sulfur‑bearing media at elevated temperatures (up to 260°C), the components required seamless forging from 316L stainless steel to ensure pitting resistance and crevice‑corrosion immunity. Our open‑die forging process optimized the grain flow pattern, eliminating porosity and inclusions, which significantly enhanced the thermal cycling endurance of the tube‑to‑tube sheet joints. All forgings were delivered with PMI and ferrite‑content verification, meeting the stringent requirements of the chemical plant’s EPC contractor.

Materials & Grades

Stainless Steel 316L (UNS S31603) and 304L (UNS S30403), with dual‑certified EN/DIN equivalents.

Specifications

Forged tube sheets (thickness 100–200 mm, diameter up to 2800 mm), channel covers, and raised‑face flanges (Class 300 – 600).

Pulp & Paper / Heavy Machinery Forging

SAPPI Paper Mill – South Africa

SAPPI’s Saiccor mill operates 23 stainless‑steel batch digesters at 140°C and 10 bar. Ronsco supplied forged heavy‑wall flanges, conical dished heads, and liquor‑inlet nozzles for these digesters. The forging material – a specially alloyed duplex stainless steel – was chosen for its excellent chloride‑stress corrosion resistance under cyclic cooking/ washing conditions. By utilising a near‑net‑shape forging process, we reduced machining allowances and preserved continuous grain flow in critical stress zones. The forgings were heat‑treated to achieve uniform grain size (ASTM 6 or finer) and demonstrated twice the impact toughness of cast alternatives. This extended the digesters’ maintenance intervals by over 30%.

Materials & Grades

Duplex Stainless Steel 2205 (UNS S32205) and 316L for less‑critical sections.

Specifications

Forged dished heads (OD 3200 mm, thickness 80 mm), RTJ flanges (Class 300), and integrally forged nozzle necks.

Application Scenario

High‑temperature pulp digesters, black‑liquor recovery boiler feedwater headers, and chemical‑mixer shafts.

Food Processing & Commercial Equipment Forging
